My second greatest achievement in Spelunky 2 speedrunning is probably that I had Rank 1 despite not being able to play until the steam release. And my greatest achievement will be to not get last place in this event, despite the incredibly tough competitors I’m going to be up against.
There are two reasons why I got so consumed by Spelunky speedrunning: The replayability of the game itself, and the pacing of the game. Although there are a lot of rogue-likes with the same level of replayability as Spelunky, none of them start off with the same fast pace. There is no slow build up of gaining better items and encountering stronger enemies, as you slowly progress through areas. You start out with the best weapon in the game, and you are at the risk of dying as soon as you take your first step.
I’m going to play as best as I can. I don’t think it is worth to play it safe in this kind of format. The competition is very tough, but I can see a scenario where I end up at the top – if I’m having a good day.
I feel like the things that hold me back the most are outside of the game. Although there are some things outside of my control, I do think I especially can work on my motivation. It’s something I’ve struggled a lot with in the past and it still affects most of my speedrunning endeavours. I hope I’ll be able to tighten up my focus, and practice as much as possible in the week leading up to the event.
I have the most speedrunning experience in non-Spelunky games, I think. Funnily enough, it will probably be of little benefit at the event. At least I have other communities to escape to if this all goes downhill and I utterly embarrass myself in front of the Spelunky crowd.
Shoutouts to all my friends in the Super Meat Boy speedrunning community!
